私の出身大学は京都教育大学の特修美術科です。特修といっても、特別偉い訳でもありません。確か小学部と中学部があって、それぞれ教育免許を取って卒業するのですが、特修は単位がとれていれば、教員免許は取らなくても良かったのか、どうか。昔の事で忘れました。
本当は、芸大に行きたかったのですが、実技のデッサンが苦手で、受験時代はずいぶん苦しみました。一年浪人して駄目でしたので、諦めました。多分、あのまま浪人を続けても受からなかったと思います。
京都教育大学は、のんびりとした雰囲気の大学でした。１、２回生の間は専攻に別れず、洋画、日本画、工芸、デザインの授業を一通り受講します。色々と試す中で、希望の専攻を決きめるのは、いい事だと思います。
私は当時アカデミックな洋画を描きたいと思っていました。しかしながら、そういった授業は大学には、ありませんでした。受験で苦しんだデッサンでしたが、なんとか物にしたいと思っていたので、お世話になった美術の予備校の夜間コースに通い、石膏デッサンをし、日曜日は油絵をさせて頂きました。
大学の洋画科の先生は、嶋本昭三先生と阿部壮先生と記憶しています。嶋本先生は、一回生の洋画の授業で講師をされていました。
当時の私は現代美術については「不真面目」といった印象しかありません。考えてみれば、芸術に真面目、不真面目といった評価をすること自体がナンセンスです。
最初の授業で「君ら、具体って知ってるか？」と問いかけられました。数名の手が上がりました。今思えば、恥ずかしい限りですが、私は当時、現代美術を全く知りませんでした。具体美術は、195４年に吉原治良のもとに糾合した関西の若手の前衛作家たちによって結成された。代表作家は、数えると切りが無いので、吉原治良、嶋本昭三、白髪一雄、村上三郎 田中敦子 元永定正 等
具体の作品は、吉原氏の「人の真似をするな。今までにないものをつくれ」という指導のもと、丸太、土、布、水、廃品などをそのままの形で作品として展示したものや、パフォーマンス的なものなど、それまでにはないまったく新しい作品を作った。
嶋本先生の授業で、幾つか心に残っているお話があります。
「君らなあ、好きな絵ばっかり見てても、勉強にならへんで。嫌いな作品があるやろ、それをなあ、トイレに貼って毎日見るんや。そしたらなあ、案外いいところが見つかったりするもんや」
「芸術って何やと思う。絵とか彫刻だけが芸術やと思うのは頭が硬い。僕は、芸術とは人を驚かすことやと思います。この本を見てみなさい。」と見せられたのは、クリスト＆ジャンヌ＝クロードによるプロジェクト、フロリダ、ビスケーン湾の11の島を計650万平米に及ぶピンクの布で囲んだ《囲まれた島》（1983)の海外の書籍であつた。
「クリストという人は、物を梱包して、それを作品にした作家です。最初は、キャンバスを布で覆ったり、身の回りの日用品を梱包した作品を作っていましたが、だんだんとスケールが大きくなって、建築を丸ごと布で覆ったり、そのうち島を布で囲ってしまいました。」
これには驚いた。そんな事をする人がいるんだと思いました。
結局、私は洋画科には入らず、嶋本先生と、ほとんどお会いすることはありませんでした。
2013年にお亡くなりになられたそうです。

Art is to surprise people
My university is a special art department of Kyoto University of Education. Even if it is a special training, it is not a special great translation. Certainly there are elementary and junior high schools, and I graduate with an education license, but if I had credits for special training, I wonder if I didn’t have to get a teacher’s license. I forgot about it in the past.
Actually, I wanted to go to art school, but I wasn’t good at drawing practical skills, so I had a lot of trouble when I was taking the exam. I gave up because I couldn’t do it for a year. Probably, I think that even if I continued the challenge as it was, I did not receive it.
Kyoto University of Education was a university with a laid-back atmosphere. During the 1st and 2nd year, students will not be divided into majors and will take all the classes of Western painting, Japanese painting, sculpture,crafts, and design. I think it’s a good thing to decide on students desired major while trying various things.
I wanted to draw academic Western films at that time. However, there was no such class at the university. It was a drawing that I had a hard time taking the exam, but I wanted to make something, so I went to the night course of the art prep school that I was indebted to, did a plaster drawing, and did an oil painting on Sunday.
I remember the teachers of the Western-style painting department at the university as Shozo Shimamoto and Sou Abe. Mr. Shimamoto was a lecturer in a first-year Western-style painting class.
At that time, I only had the impression that contemporary art was “not serious.” When you think about it, it is nonsense to evaluate art as serious or not.
In the first class, I was asked, “Do you guys know GUTAI” Several hands have been raised. It’s embarrassing to think about it now, but I didn’t know contemporary art at all at that time. Gutai Art Association was formed in 1954 by young avant-garde artists in the Kansai region, who were confronted with Jiro Yoshihara. The representative writers are endless when counted, so Jiro Yoshihara, Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Saburo Murakami, Atsuko Tanaka, Sadamasa Motonaga, etc.
The specific work is an exhibition of logs, soil, cloth, water, scraps, etc. as they are, under the guidance of Mr. Yoshihara, “Don’t imitate people. Make something new.” I made a completely new work, such as a performance one.
There are some memorable stories in Professor Shimamoto’s class.
“You guys, even if you just look at your favorite pictures, you can’t study anything at all. If you have a work you don’t like, you can put it on the toilet and watch it every day. Then, you’ll find something unexpectedly good. or”
“I think art is something. It’s hard to think that only paintings and sculptures are art. I think art is something that surprises people. Take a look at this book.” The book was a project by Christo & Jeanne-Claude, an overseas book on “Enclosed Island” (1983), in which 11 islands in Biscayne Bay, Florida were surrounded by a total of 6.5 million square meters of pink cloth. ..
“Christo is an artist who packed things and made them into works. At first, he made works by covering canvas with cloth and packing daily necessities, but the scale gradually increased. He covered the whole building with cloth, and eventually he surrounded the island with cloth. “
I was surprised at this. I thought there were people who did that.
