砂の器

「砂の器」という邦画をご存知ですか？　松本清張の長編小説を映画化した作品です。

東京都内で起きた、ある殺人事件を発端に物語は進行していく。刑事は事件を捜査するうちに、一人の男が重要参考人として浮かんでくる。被害者と犯人の意外な関係と殺人の動機、そしてその背景に「ハンセン氏病」が取り上げられており、物語は重層的な深みを帯びている。

1974年に松竹で映画化され、また7度テレビドラマ化されており、松本清張の傑作の一つに数えられる作品である。

この作品の中に、芸術と社会の関係性に触れた場面が出てくる。

婚約者田所佐知子とその父でもと大蔵大臣の田所重喜との会食の席上－

婚約者の父である田所が和賀に言う。

「まあ、好きなようにやりなさい。できることは何でもするから・・・」

これに対して佐知子は和賀を振り返って言う。

「大丈夫よ、英良さん、今度はすごい意気込みなんだから。きっとすごい作品になるわ」

佐知子の言葉に頷く和賀。続いて田所が、自分の過去を感慨部深げに回想するようにいう。

「これからの君は大変だな。いろいろと足を引っ張る連中が出てくる。自分に親しい振りをしてな・・・」

佐知子が答える。

「パパッたら政治の世界と芸術家の世界を一緒にしちゃ駄目だわ」

それに対して和賀。

「いや、同じ人間の世界だ、そう違うわけはない」

ここで一端言葉をきって続ける。

「しかし、違う点があるとすれば、それは我々の世界は出来上がった作品が勝負だということです」

主人公の和賀は、天才ピアニストとして世に出ようとしている。そして、芸術も政治も同じ人間のすることだから、違いはないと言い切っている。幼い頃から恵まれない環境に育ち、戦後の混乱の中で生き延び、芸術家として頭角を現してきた和賀の人間に対する鋭い洞察が見て取れる。

彼は、大蔵大臣の娘と関係を持つことで、自分の才能を世に広めようと画策しているのである。なんという強かさであろうか？

しかしながら、完璧と思われた和賀の計画は、思わぬことで失敗する。

そこに介在したのは、父という存在。

私は、そこに「愛」の問題があると思っている。

CASTLE OF SAND

Seicho Matsumoto’s novel has a novel called “Castle of Sand”. It’s also a movie, but there is such an exchange in the play.

In this work, there is a scene that touches on the relationship between art and society.

Sachiko Tadokoro, the official fiancé of Waga, and her father, Shigeki Tadokoro, Minister of Finance, had a dinner at the table-

Tadokoro, the father of her fiancé, tells Waga.

“Well, do whatever you want. I’ll do whatever I can …”

In response, Sachiko looks back on Waga.

“It’s okay, Mr. Hideyoshi, I’m really enthusiastic this time. I’m sure it will be a great work.”

Waga nods to Sachiko’s words. Then Tadokoro asks him to recollect his past with deep emotion.

“It’s hard for you from now on. There will be a lot of people pulling your legs. Pretend to be close to yourself …”

Sachiko answers.

“If you daddy, you can’t combine the world of politics with the world of artists.”

On the other hand, Waga.

“No, it’s the same human world, it can’t be so different.”

I will continue to speak here.

“But the only difference is that in our world, the finished work is all.”

The main character, Waga, is about to enter the world as a genius pianist. And he asserts that there is no difference because he is the same person in art and politics. You can see a keen insight into the human beings of Waga, who grew up in a disadvantaged environment from an early age, survived the postwar turmoil, and emerged as an artist.

He plans to spread his talent to the world by having a relationship with the daughter of the Minister of Finance. What a strength it is!

However, Waga’s plan, which seemed perfect, unexpectedly failed.

It was his father who intervened there.

I think there is a problem of “love” there.
