現代美術の作家はブログではあまり取り上げていませんが、興味がないわけではありません。むしろ、現代アート（定義については触れません）には、特に身体性、五感を刺激し、これまで持っていた自分の感覚が変わってしまうような作品に惹かれます。そのような作品は、絵画ではなく、立体作品やインスタレーションに見られるように思います。
一方で、絵画については、どうなのか。
アートの歴史を振り返ってみると、マルセル デュシャン以降、アートは多様化し、特に絵画については、「絵画の死」と言われるように、新たな表現を構築することが難しくなったように捉えています。
そのような状況下で、果敢に自分の絵画を探求している表現の冒険者達を紹介したいと思います。
今回は、フランスの作家 フィリップ コニェ(Phlippe Cognee)です。
あまり日本では知られていませんが、美術史の文脈を正確に把握した上で、絵画の復興を試みている作家であると思います。
作品の特徴は、写真やビデオの映像を絵画に流用しています。これはゲルハルト リヒターに近いアプローチであると私は思います。
描く対象は多岐に渡ります。ビルや建物、屠殺された牛、骸骨、グーグルマップの映像などです。
作品から受ける印象は、極めて「傍観的な視線」です。「屠殺された牛」はレンブラントも描いています。レンブラントらしい暗い背景から牛のフォルムがはっきりと浮かび上がってきます。
コニュの作品には、そのようなドラマチックな力は感じられません。むしろ、そのようなドラマ性を排除し、その存在そのものを表現しているように感じました。
その存在について申し上げますと、大変希薄な印象を受けます。まるで夢の中にいるかのような、非存在と存在の中間地点とでもあろうかというような、表現です。私は、このような表現に、バーチャルとリアルの混在した今日の世界が表出されていると思うのです。
私達の日常を振り返って見ると、1日の多くの時間を携帯電話の液晶画面やパーソナルコンピュータのディスプレイを見る時間に使われている事に気付きます。またその画面には、加工されたり、また仮想空間として人工的に作られた静止画や動画が映し出されています。そのような現実と虚構が混在した世界こそが今日的な『リアル』ではないか。
私はコニェの作品から、そのようなことを感じ、自分の制作にも取り入れています。

◦ This time, about Mr,Philippe Cognee, a French artist.
◦ A feature of his work is the diversion of photographs and video footage to paintings. I think this is a close approach to Gerhard Richter. He draws a wide variety of objects. Buildings and houses, slaughtered cows, skeletons, Google Maps footage, and more. The impression I get from his work is an extremely “side-by-side look”. Rembrandt also painted with the same motif of a slaughtered cow. He made a dramatic impression with the contrast of light and dark. I don’t feel that such a dramatic power in Cognee’s work. Rather, I felt that he eliminated such drama and expressed its very existence.
◦ When I talk about its existence, I had a very sparse impression. It is an expression that makes you feel as if you are in a dream, as if it were an intermediate point between non-existence and existence. I feel today’s world where virtual and real are mixed in such expressions.
◦ Looking back on our daily lives, we find that much of the day is spent looking at the LCD screens of mobile phones and the displays of personal computers. In addition, still images and videos that have been processed or artificially created as a virtual space are projected on the screen. Isn’t the world where such reality and fiction coexist is the “real” of today?
◦ I feel that kind of thing from cognee’s work and incorporate it into my own work.
