前回の内容で、芸術は政治や経済の中に含まれるもので、社会を超えるものではないと書いた。
「こんなことはあたりまえ」とおっしゃる方が多いとは思うのだが、芸術にどっぷり入れ込むと、これが真逆になってしまうのだ。かく言う私も芸術を極端に特殊な世界だと思っていたことがあった。
よく変わった人を「彼は芸術家だから」という表現を使うことがある。
その背景には、「芸術家は少し普通の人とは変わっていて、だから特殊な才能がある」という意味合いを含んでいるように思う。
これは、多分に近代のヨーロッパの作家の影響があると推測する。
例えばゴッホなどは、その筆頭格である。画商の弟に援助されながら、生涯を芸術に捧げ、悲劇的な死を迎える。
セザンヌは、資産家の長男として生まれるが、絵に没頭し隠遁生活を続けながら、孤独な人生を送る。
モネは目を患いながら、ルノアールはリウマチと戦いながら、絵画と向き合った。
そこから導き出されるアーティスト像は「世間の無理解と戦いながら、独自の世界を作り出し、悲劇的な死を迎える」という偏った像である。
私は近代作家を否定するわけではない。セザンヌ、ゴッホなどの作品は素晴らしいと思う。しかしながら 彼らが人間として素晴らしいかどうかはわからないし、どうでもいいように思う。
一つ言えることは彼らも人間である以上、生活していかねばならなかったわけで、要は「金」をどこかから調達して、飯を食っていたわけである。
ゴッホは弟に、セザンヌは父親に援助されながら暮らしていたのである。
私が言いたいのは「芸術が社会を超えることはできないし、今はむしろ芸術が社会を後追いしている」
ということ。

I’m sure many people say, “This is natural,” but if you put it all into art, the opposite is true. I once thought that art was an extremely special world.
We sometimes use the expression “because he is an artist” for strangers.
The background seems to include the meaning that “artists are a little different from ordinary people, so they have special talents.”
I presume that this is probably influenced by modern European writers.
Van Gogh, for example, is the leading case. With the help of his younger brother, he devotes his life to art and suffers a tragic death.
Cezanne is born as the eldest son of a wealthy man, but he lives a lonely life while immersing himself in painting and continuing a secluded life.
Monet suffered from his eyes, and Renoir faced the painting while fighting rheumatism.
The image of the artist derived from it is a biased image that “while fighting the incomprehension of the world, create a unique world and face a tragic death.”
I do not deny modern writers. I think the works of Cezanne and Van Gogh are wonderful. However, I don’t know if they are great as human beings, and I don’t care.
One thing I can say is that as long as they are human beings, they had to live, and the point was that they procured “gold” from somewhere and ate food.
Van Gogh lived with the help of his younger brother and Cezanne with the help of his father.
I would like to say, “Art cannot transcend society, and now it is rather art following society.”
