もう一つは、作家自体が「絵画の死」を積極的に進めた事である。 一般的には、マルセル・デュシャンの「レディメイド」、 またミニマルアートからコンセプチャルアートへの流れが、それに該当する。マルセル・デュシャンの画家としての経歴をみると、初期は印象派、フォービズム、 キュビズム、未来派の影響を受け、絵画を制作していた。1913年にニューヨークで発表した「階段を降りる裸体No2」が話題を呼び、一躍時 代の寵児となる。 一方で、デュシャンは、所属していたグループの中で、作品を巡って対立し、「階段を降りる裸体No2」については題名の変更を求められたため、グループ展に出品していた作品を取り下げたとも言われている。
原因は特定できないが、これ以降デュシャンは、絵画を放棄し、アートを既成概念の枠から外す事に生涯を 費やす。
デュシャンがどうかは別にして、絵画を制作する中で、アートの持つ権威や、アートを形 成する組織の中のヒエラルキーに疑問や嫌気がさした結果、新たな表現に活路を見 出す作家が多い。
そして、先鋭的な評論家達もそのような作家を擁護し、絵画にこだわる作家は古い と決めつけたのである。

Regardless of whether Duchan is or not, as a result of doubts and disgust at the authority of art and the hierarchy within the organization that forms art while producing paintings, there are artists who find a way to new expressions.
And the cutting-edge critics also defended such an artist, and decided that the artist who was particular about painting was an old one.
