ポストモダニズムは、あらゆる表現に混乱と新たな導きを与えた。 アートに於いては、「絵画の死」が叫ばれ、インスタレーションやVRなどの新たな 表現手法が注目を浴びている。
ところで、なぜ絵画は死ななければならないのだろう? 一つは、19世紀はじめに写真が発明され、広く利用される事によって、絵画のもつ 対象の再現性の価値が下がった事があげられる。 中世ヨーロッパにおいては、肖像画は画家にとって大きな収入源であつた。また王 室や教会と言った権力に仕えることが生活を安定させることに繋がった。画家にと つて、3次元の空間を2次元に置き換える技術は、少なくとも後期印象派までは、 絵画の伝統的な系譜に連なって継承されて来たと私は思う。このような絵画の手法 は現代ではイリュージョンの再現と呼ばれる。このイリュージョンという言葉は、 画家の技術を軽視した考え方であると私は思います。平面に3次元の空間を再現す るには、様々な錯覚を用いた視覚効果や空間を構成する技術が必要です。それと共 に、作家の個性的とも言える表現力が相まって、絵画として成立するのです。とこ ろが、具体的な事象を描く絵画は、『イリュージョンの再現』という言葉で一括り にされて、個々の作品の表現を真剣に見るということがない、そう言った風潮が90年 代のアート界に蔓延していたと私は思う。「絵画の死」は、そのようなアート界の 潮流の中で進行したのです。

Such a painting technique is called illusion reproduction in modern times. I think the word illusion is a disregard for the artist’s technique. In order to reproduce a three-dimensional space on a plane, he needs visual effects using various illusions and techniques for constructing the space. At the same time, the artist’s unique expressiveness is combined to create a painting. However, in the 90’s, paintings depicting concrete phenomena were grouped together under the phrase “reproduction of illusion”, and the expression of each work was not taken seriously. I think it was widespread in the art world. The “death of painting” proceeded in such a trend of the art world.
